University School to unveil new academic wing | News
University School in Hunting Valley will unveil its new 52,000-square-foot academic wing at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 as part of the school's 123rd annual homecoming weekend.
The new wing at the upper campus, 2785 SOM Center Road, is part of a $22 million project that includes renovation of the existing building with state-of-the-art facilities for the visual, musical and dramatic arts, as well as the Class of '71 Common. These are scheduled for competion in fall 2013. There also will be a new school entrance and a multi-story, glass-facade lobby.
“This spectacular new building honors the high caliber of our faculty and gives them the teaching tools they need to do their best work,” said University School Headmaster Steve Murray. “Boys now have room to move, interact and explore. Teachers can instruct among their students and have the flexibility to arrange classrooms to best suit their disciplines and teaching styles.”
Designed by the nationally renowned architectural firm, Centerbrook Architects of Centerbrook, Conn., the $27.5 million fully funded project is the first phase of a master plan and includes an endowment for maintenance and other costs associated with the facility.
Classes are well underway in the new wing, which was ready for the start of the school year on August 23. US broke ground for the project in May 2011.
The upper two floors of the new wing house 25 classrooms for history, math, English, and foreign languages. The lower floor contains classroom-lab suites for physics, biology, and chemistry, as well as a three-room environmental science suite and a special-projects lab. All classrooms are outfitted with interactive technology. Each academic department has dedicated common areas for students to study and interact with faculty.
